LinguisticsVisit the Phonetics Lab in the Linguistics Department and experience a variety of hands-on activities about speech sound production, acoustics, and perception, presented by graduate and undergraduate linguistics students.
Experience how phoneticians measure movements of speech articulators, airflow out of the mouth and nose, and activity of the vocal folds. Paint your tongue with charcoal powder to see where you form different consonant sounds. See acoustic displays of your voice pitch and the frequency components of different speech sounds.
Try out some speech perception experiments, and see how infants participate in perception experiments in the infant language lab. Hear sound samples from a wide range of languages in the online UCLA Phonetics Archive. Many of these activities are suitable for school-age children. {More Info}
